“What nobody expected but everyone needed”
Monolith combines science fiction with a dystopian reality that almost feels like it was planned to be released during these uncertain times. Think Orwell, Kubrick and Pharoahe Monch at the same Blackjack table at 4am. The EP was originated by Massachusetts producers Egadz and Hunk Rock who have been mutually connected since 2005 yet uncommon enough to create this unconventional and original project lacking in today’s music world.
The EP features Long Beach lyricist LMNO who is a well known group member of The Visionaries and worked with underground legends Madlib, Evidence, and Oh No. His partner in rhyme is Godforbid, the Brooklyn-based front man of the band That Handsome Devil. He first gained notoriety with Thirstin Howl III’s group Alaskan Fishermen in 2003. Since then he created new genres but still infuses anything he touches with eloquently stated conundrums. Even still he will appear out of nowhere on hip hop projects from Czarface and MF Doom. On Monolith he returns to his rap heritage with enhanced rhymes of contention “LMNO and I are two people who try to do the right thing in a world that rewards the wrong. Sometimes you stand alone for your beliefs like a F%cking monolith” says Godforbid.
Monolith is uniquely offbeat even for underground Hip Hop. It’s clearly something else and not trying to follow trends. The final result is an unorthodox melting pot of beats and rhymes that stays real to each artist involved.
