Shaggy Palms is a brand new Electronic duo from Boston heavily influenced by Hip Hop and Motown that integrates different genres. The group is made up of singer/bassist Dave Vierling and producer Neil Popkin who currently resides in Cali. “There was a healthy alternative rock scene in Boston when I was growing up and I’ve definitely soaked up that sound into my music. East coast grit meets the Cali aesthetic. Not only do I record out there but I’ve been mistaken for being from California multiple times because of my shaggy hair and a laid-back appearance, so the “fun in the sun” vibe fits my personality” says Dave. Sonically the pair’s experimental aesthetic will serve them adequately in the world of Electronica.
Their debut single Holy Plan definitely has a groove and the lyrics speak to supernatural reasons why certain events happen. The song originally started out as David’s baseline after a long hiatus but then became the transformation of him becoming a vocalist. “I had never really tried singing ever in my life. Not in the shower, not by myself in the car. So when we recorded this track, it proved to me that I can sing and that people like my voice” says David. Conceptually the track examines the term “luck” and the good or bad forces that some people associate with it. “In the end, the song encourages you to think about “luck” as a coin flip instead of anything deeper. Therefore, make amends, let go of grudges. The results of actions are less personal and more like “a roll of the dice” says David.
